STate of the Leagues:

HONORING YOUR CONTRACT

Updated: Aug 24, 2023

What if I told you in the year 2023 NFL contracts would mean absolutely nothing. Now before I begin I must say power to the players I want to see them get payed it's a brutal sport out there. But when you sign a 4 year deal is it asking that much to follow through till it's up. I mean seriously, if you are in the 3rd or final year of you contract you can't get all mad on twitter about how your under paid and hold out of training camp it's just ridiculous. It's very unprofessional. The market is constantly climbing and it's only going to continue to grow. They all know this. You got Cris Jones for example, in 2020 he was the highest paid D-lineman in the league with his new 4 year deal. Here comes year four and he's making 20 million dollars and the only players making more is .....

Don't get me wrong I'd say he's a top 3 player on that list but the differential in pay is

1-4 million dollars. Which to the average Joe that's a lot of money but with the Monopoly money they make that shouldn't be that big of a pill to swallow when your winning Super Bowls. I know it's a bit of an ego thing but c'mon man you have one year left till you can re-up on your contract and who knows the cap might go up next year and his number could go up. It just doesn't make sense to me. Now a situation like Josh Jacobs or Saquon Barkley I can understand their number is extremely low compared to most positions and their shelf life is about half of a D-lineman's. Along with the fact their being franchise tagged. They fulfilled their contract and now they don't agree with their number. I do like the franchise tag though it gives both sides more time to get a long term deal done while the player makes a solid chunk of change in the process. It did work out for the best for both sides in the Ravens and Lamar Jackson contract extravaganza. My whole thing in this Cris Jones situation is the team took care of him last time show them some loyalty and play out you contract. There's no loyalty with these players anymore. There's definitely fickleness on the organization's side of the spectrum but at the end of the day thats not the subject we're on and they're not the one's holding out for a contract dispute.
